If you have a gadget that you’re ready to toss you might be happy to know that if you live in Regina, Winnipeg or Ontario, for a limited time, that worthless handheld device just might be worth a pepperoni slice.
During the month of April, as part of Pizza Pizza’s Cells for Slices program, anyone bringing in any no longer desirable device to one of their 365 traditional restaurant locations can exchange it for a nice little snack.
More than just phones
The Cells for Slices program, now in its 10th year, to date, has collected more than 5,600 used mobile devices. That number is expected to grow even more, especially with the list of acceptable devices being expanded to include mp3 players, tablets, cameras and adapters in addition to cell phones and smartphones.
Instead of heading to the landfill, these devices are recycled with the proceeds going to benefit Food Banks Canada’s Phones for Food program.

And we’re seeing more and more unwanted devices. As the technology changes so rapidly many of us are opting to upgrade more frequently. Maybe our gadgets have become obsolete; maybe they’re no longer compatible with other devices or maybe we just want the latest and greatest. And sometimes when they break they’re often non-repairable or not worth repairing. Either way, they get tossed, dumped or end up gathering dust in our closets or dark basements.
“We´re offering an easy way for people to dispose of their old and unwanted devices in a way that rewards our customers,” said Pat Finelli, chief marketing officer for Pizza Pizza. “The Cells for Slices program contributes to a great program run by the good people at Food Banks Canada and is especially beneficial for the preservation of the environment and the individuals and families they serve.”
April is a good month for spring-cleaning and spring clearing, so if you’ve got a location nearby, why not trade that unwanted handheld device for a yummy pizza slice.
